COPYWRITER

According to my résumé, I have a long history of writing print and broadcast ads, websites, brochures, catalogs, product packaging, and JUNK MAIL for business, politics, and the arts. In addition, some teenage tech nerds at the Department of Government Efficiency found out that I've been the copywriter-in-residence for a woke-ass GRAPHIC DESIGN AGENCY since 1990-something. And I openly admit to having spent a year as the SUPPLEMENT SLINGER for the e-commerce wing of an Austin-based conspiracy webcult.

SOMEHOW I MANAGED TO WRITE A BOOK

Believe it or not, I'm the author of a scholarly history of the world's first subscription record club. It's called REVOLUTIONIZING CHILDREN'S RECORDS, and it was published in 2008 by Scarecrow Press (a subsidiary of Rowman & Littlefield, which is a subsidiary of Bloomsbury Publishing). It even won an award that you can see if you click here and scroll about halfway down.

SOMEHOW I MANAGED TO GET MY NAME ON ANOTHER BOOK

With the late great Professor Ronald D. Cohen (1940-2022), I co-authored SELLING FOLK MUSIC, a coffee table book which presents a visual history of folk music marketing since 1900. It was published in 2017 by the University Press of Mississippi.

LEXICOGRAPHER FOR TEXTBOOK

I wrote the glossary for EARTH HISTORY: STORIES OF OUR GEOLOGICAL PAST (Cambridge University Press). One of the professors who wrote the book is an old friend of mine, and he didn't want to write the glossary, so he got me to do it because I like writing definitions and needed the money.

JOURNALIST

I’ve written approximately 1 billion articles for print and online publications. These are usually done in a pseudo-tabloid style, ranging from NOT BAD hidden histories and neglected news to CLICKBAIT CRAP about sex scandals, cannibals, horrible parents, famous celebrities I've never heard of, and other topics that Americans love.

NOVELIST

My obscene comedic novel about football might get finished someday. I don't mean to brag, but I think it's going to be the worst novel ever written.

VAULTHOUND AND ARCHIVES DEALER

As an agent in the institutional placement of archives, I brokered the acquisition of The Young People's Records / Children’s Record Guild Collection for the SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION, the Raymond Abrashkin Papers for the deGrummond Children's Literature Collection, University of Southern Mississippi; the Horace and Judith Sidorsky Grenell Collection for The Juilliard School Archives; and the John Stevenson Papers for the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History at Duke University. I will be doing more of this, unless I don't.
